Working with Mafanikio was an extremely worthwhile
experience. Our
work camp was in Mikindani Primary school. For three weeks we helped
in many ways in the community. We helped reconstruct bathrooms, taught
classes and encouraged the community to go and get HIV/AIDS tested.
Mafanikio is a wonderful organisation because it works hands on with
the community. Mafanikio encouraged us to live and learn amongst the
locals. The people of Kenya are the most positive, grateful, heart
warming people I have ever met. I will never forget my time in
Minikdani and I definitely hope to return.
Participating in a Mafanikio workcamp is a memorable
and rewarding experience. While working in Mikindani primary school
I met some incredible kids whose families were more than welcoming
to us. I made some great friends and was lucky to have the chance
to really experience the Kenyan way of life. I worked with a group
of thirteen people. Chipo (an incredible woman) advised us and looked
after us for the duration of the workcamp. Our project was to relay
the floor of the toilets in the school. I really enjoyed the experience
of working together in a team and I feel I have gained a valuable
skill for life. I also taught some classes to the wonderful children.
We took turns, working in small groups, to do the cooking and we had
committees to look after each aspect of the workcamp. I gained so
much from my experience with Mafanikio and I hope I have given as
much as I have received. Kenyan people are some of the friendliest
people in the world. They were so welcoming to us and I am delighted
to have bonded culturally with them and to have helped them in their
community. I am now in contact with several of the children from the
school and hope to return to Kenya as soon as I can.
Last summer I spent 3 weeks with Chipo (the Co-ordinator
of Mafanikio and one of the most amazing people I know and love)
and Mafanikio in Kenya. We where about an hour drive outside Nairobi
in a tiny village called Kirasha. For 3 weeks we lived with a Kenyan
family and worked on a building site to help construct a primary
school. I was given a chance to see a side to Africa that I might
never have seen. We had a chance to help people who are in bad need
of our help and encouragement. It was the most amazing and fulfilling
thing I have ever done. Not only that, but Kenya is really an amazing
country, beautiful scenery, wonderful, beautiful people. We had
a really great time and had so much fun and made some amazing friends.
I can't wait to get back there.
